Our journey started when my husband Joaquim and I, purchased the 260 hectare (650 acre) Azamor estate in 1998 from his family. In 2001 and 2002 we planted the 25 hectare vineyard. As the estate was designated an ecological and agricultural reserve, we purchased and joined the neighbouring property to build the Azamor winery.

Our first wine, Azamor 2003, was produced from the grapes planted in 2001. The wine was very fruity and approachable with unusual freshness and balance due to the estates terroir and climate. To our delight our first Azamor, 2003 won a gold medal in the Concours Mundial Bruxelles.

During the 2004 vintage we harvested the whole vineyard, not yet sure how good each variety would be. Our Petit Verdot with a touch of Monvedré, were fermented together. It tasted so good after the fermentation finished that we decided to put it into French oak barrels, and so our Azamor Petit Verdot single variety was born.

It was during this vintage also that Azamor Selected Vines came to be. Local Alentejo cuisine is unique, with lots of strong flavours including garlic, coriander and spicy olive oil. Our Selected Vines is our wine most suited to our local dishes. Produced

grapes picked from the best plots in the vineyard, it is complex and full bodied, refined in French and American oak barrels.

2004 was the best vintage of the decade. We had some exceptional quality Syrah from our Chapoutier clone plot and excellent Alicante Boushet. The blended wine was aged in new French and America oak barrels for 20 months. We added a small amount of Touriga Franca to give it a classic lift. The wine was bottled and left in our personal cellar in the estate for three years, before being launched as Icon d’Azamor. Only made  in exceptional years we had to wait until 2010 for our second Icon d’Azamor. We anticipate our third edition will be 2013.

Having resisted the temptation to add a white to the range and having tasted as many whites as possible in the meantime, we finally created our first white wine in 2014. Using the Portuguese grape varieties of Arinto and Antão Vaz, Azamor Selected White has exceptional balance and fruit and a long finish

We remain dedicated to improving and perfecting each vintage….
